This recipe was entered in the contest for Your Best Recipe with Tomato and Basil.


I'm sure it's not original, but I "invented" this at home with a few garden-grown items back when I bothered with the time and expense of trying to grow my own

Serves 2

  • 1 loaf Italian bread, halved
  • 1 tomato, sliced
  • 10 fresh Basil leaves
  • 6 pieces crisp bacon
  • 1 tablespoon mayonaise (I prefer Duke's)
  • 2 ounces fresh mozarella cheese, sliced
  • Black pepper to taste
  1. Toast bread until slightly golden brown
  2. Spread mayo on bread
  3. Layer with fresh basil and tomato slices and add black pepper to taste
  4. Add slices of mozarella cheese
  5. Add slices of bacon and top with top half of bread. Cut in half

    JoCoJack says: To really make this a hearty sandwich, add a few ounces of sliced turkey to make it an Italian Club sandwich. You can also broil this as an open face sandwich to take it to a higher level, but it is good cold (especially on hot summer days)
